In March, KOMCA (Korea Music Copyright Association) introduced a new rule for song registration.
From now on, any works created with help of AI cannot be registered and will not be eligible for royalties.
This strict policy enforces a total ban on AI usage in any form – meaning 0% of AI. Not only fully AI-generated works, but also those where AI tools were used to create or enhance any element such as vocals, lyrics, or sound, do not meet the requirements for registration. During submittion applicants must confirm that no AI was used, and if KOMCA has any doubts, they must provide detailed documentation proving that AI was not involved. Otherwise, the registration may be revoked, and rights invalidated.
KOMCA justifies its decision by pointing to the lack of legal regulations around AI and copyright in South Korean law and has chosen to act preventively. It is the first organization of its kind in the world to introduce a total ban on the usage of AI in songs.
